Army Templates for Battle Chronicler

I am hoping to use Battle Chronicler more often in my battle reports. It's a great little program, and does a lot of things automatically. However, what it doesn't have is much Kings of War specific data. For each army you face, you need to put in the details of all the units.

So what I'm doing is making up army templates for each of the factions in KoW. Not sure how long it will take me. Each army takes about an hour I guess, but it's boring af so who knows when I will get around to it all. But this is where I'll store them, for you to download and use.

KoW Elves Template for Battle Chronicler

KoW Forces of Basilea Template for Battle Chronicler

KoW Dwarf Armies Template for Battle Chronicler

KoW Kingdoms of Men Template for Battle Chronicler

KoW Forces of Nature Template for Battle Chronicler

KoW Abyssal Dwarfs Template for Battle Chronicler

Forces of Nature

Kingdoms of Men

  1. Hi Tasman!

Thanks a lot for the file! I have just uploaded it and played a bit and it seems to me I simply did too many things manually. No wonder it takes longer to make a battle report :)

I really like the military options for different unit types you used. It actually looks neat. And if you still want to add extra details it is ok to have initials label for the unit anyway. It really opens more options for making your own reports more entertaining.

I need to try and import some pictures of real miniatures and see how that combines.

I would love to help you out with the template making so maybe we can split the work? Let me know if you would like to do that and we can discuss which army we want to do each.

    Thanks again for the template!

    1. No worries mate. I'll stick with the factions in the KoW rulebook, if you want to get started on the Uncharted Empire ones that would be great.

I'm a fan of the military unit icons. I find it's easier to get a handle on what's what visually. I'll post up a key detailing what's what.

Infantry, Cavalry & Artillery are all the standard icons.
Bowmen and Crossbowmen (low or no piercing) I'm using the Rocket icon.
Rifles & heavy crossbows (high piercing) I'm using Anti-Tank
Units that can fly have the Airborne icon.
Melee units with high CS have the Mountain Unit as well as infantry/cavalry.

At a glance, you should be able to see the ranged units, the heavy infantry, etc.

    2. Awesome! I will follow your lead and try to prepare templates for the Uncharted Empires armies. I will send the files for your approval. :)

  2. Hi Tas!

Just letting you know I have created the first file for the Night Stalkers. Here is the link, let me know what you think:

    1. pretty good, you've got it mostly correct, you just want to use the 'Troop Type' field instead of the 'Unit Name' field.

'Unit name' is for fluff. Troop type is crunch. For example I might have a unit with "The Black Thorns" in the 'Unit Name' field, and "Heavy Pike Block" in the 'Troop Type'.

But you've got the general idea! We should have this knocked over in a week or so. Then maybe we'll work together on a short guide on how to write up reports, and hopefully encourage more people to do them. If we can work out as many time-saving measures as possible, get the report-writing process down to say a couple of hours, I think that would help a lot.

    2. Hi Tas!

Thanks! I will correct the list. I will do my best to get one list done each day, we will see how many I will really be able to do. It is not that time consuming really.

Guide on battle reports (or simply sharing my experience so far) is definitely on the "to do" list. It would be great to combine the efforts!

Totally agree, if we can provide some good ideas people might start writing reports more often. I believe one reason that puts them off is the amount of time it may require.

      Cheers!

    1. looking good. I'll probably change the colours for the Brotherhood, was planning on using that colour red for the Abyssals. But otherwise it's spot on. thanks :)

  4. Hi Tas,

Changing colors should be easy, although you need to do unit by unit since we are using "individual" settings.

    1. no worries! I'm writing a report up at the moment, will be a couple days before I get back to doing templates myself. But we are halfway there.

Also have you looked at making/editing components? You can create things like loot tokens, waver markers etc yourself in the program, no need to go to MS paint after and add them in. You'll see on my next report, should be up this weekend.

  6. Hi Tas!

Looking forward to reading the report! I am also writing one too but since I do it in stages anyway I usually have a bit of time to go for a template per army. I would like to keep up the pace so that we have it all ready sooner rather than later.

In general, I did look at making my own components. I know some players do it for their own set of terrain, for example. I did so for the maps from UB so I had the terrain right as well. And they look nice too!

I also tried to make some spells indicators long time ago. In general, I think I haven't really explored the possibilities yet and it might be a good idea to come back to it with KoW.

That's why I am very curious about your report! The army templates already made me think about other, even more fancy ways of representing units. Thanks a lot for the inspiration!

    Cheers!

    1. Thanks mate. I should be able to get more done today, had a bit of a busy period at home. Once we are done, I'll put them all up on a separate page rather than a post, so it is easier to find.
